AI for Business and the Data Infrastructure Challenge

In a new feature article, ZDNet’s Daphne Leprince-Ringuet has surveyed a variety of  reports on AI adoption in the enterprise. “all the reports point to is that businesses' interest in AI is growing,” she notes, but citing one report from the research firm Gartner that says “the number of companies implementing AI-related technologies in the past four years has grown by 270%.”

Implementation, however, remains spotty, but early successes are in sales and marketing automation, with machine learning helping marketers understand user behavior in an effort to better promote solutions and products. Others include supply chain efficiency in manufacturing, and real-time data interpretation for the oil and gas industry.

Still, the article stresses that such implementations are “far from the norm” across most industry verticals. Definitions of what constitutes “artificial intelligence” remain loose and a unclear, as do implementation strategies. In addition, people remain concerned over privacy and ethics issues in AI. In fact, according to a survey cited by KPMG international, only 17 percent of Global 500 business have begun to deploy AI “at scale.”

The article presents a lot to consider about how artificial intelligence deployment strategies will play out over time. One thing we understand is that software-defined infrastructure solutions will be key to rolling out these strategies. Composable infrastructure solutions can accelerate AI deployment by enabling a faster, more adaptive software platform for its uneven processes, from ingest to inference.
